Obituary of Susan Smith Glawe

Please share a memory of Susan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Susan Smith Glawe of Cedar Knolls, NJ, passed away at 4:15 a.m. on July 10th surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with breast cancer.  Visitations will be held at Dangler Funeral Home, 600 Speedwell Avenue, Morris Plains on Thursday, July 12th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Friday, July 13th from 10:00 a.m. – noon with the funeral service, conducted by Reverend Tony MacNaughton directly following.

Susan was born in Nanticoke, PA in 1948 to Albert and Margaret (Griffiths) Smith.  She grew up in East Orange, was a graduate of Susquehanna University and a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.  After marriage, Susan lived in Bloomfield for ten years prior to moving with her family to Cedar Knolls.  She was a social worker for Essex County before becoming the Administrative Assistant at Hildale Park Presbyterian Church, where she worked for over twenty years.

Susan was the beloved wife of Philip Glawe, having just recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary.  Also surviving are her son Joshua Glawe, his wife Michele, and their son Sean of Chester, NJ and her daughter Sarah (Glawe) Casanovas, her husband Joe and their daughters Eliza and Ruby of Elmhurst, IL.  Susan was a dedicated, supportive, loving mother and a doting grandmother, who truly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Susan was always full of life.  She loved traveling, spending time with friends, playing canasta, reading, solving cross word puzzles, and being a wordsmith when playing Scrabble. Her smile, kind spirit and good heart will be missed by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) to help end type I diabetes (jdrf.org) or Surfside Recovery Services, Inc. (3 Edgewood Drive Somers Point, NJ 08244) to support young men in recovery from substance use disorders and their families on the path to wellness.

Across the dark night, we are not afraid.

Our love is the star that guides us.

Through the empty desert, we do not thirst.

Our love is the water that refreshes.

On the long journey, we do not weary.

Our love is the truth that offers strength.

As the mountains rise before us, we are not discouraged.

Our love is the hope that waits for us on the other side. When we are together, let us hold hands.

Our love is the promise that is never broken.
