Obituary of Joan T McElroy

Joan McElroy, 75, of Montclair, NJ, passed away on July 24, 2016. Joan was born and raised in Newark, NJ. She graduated from St. Vincent’s Academy, Newark and went on to earn her B.A. degree from St. Elizabeth College, Convent Station, and her MSW from Fordham University, New York. Joan began her successful career life as a Sister of Charity from 1959-1976. She then worked as a Psychiatric Social Worker & became the Director of Employees Assistance Program of Operating Engineers for the Local 68. She was also the Director of the Princeton Family Center for Education from 2008 – 2016. For all of her outstanding accomplishments, Joan was awarded the Governors’ Award for being an Outstanding Professional. Joan is survived by her devoted siblings, Robert Burke, and Owen and Monita McElroy. She is also survived by her cherished nieces and nephews, Kelly Hynes, Sean Hynes, Jennifer and Tony Shober, Michael and Cindi Burke, Stephen and Mary Lynn Burke, Brian and Lisa Burke, and Owen McElroy, as well as 15 cherished great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved siblings, Ann Maureen, and Bernadette and her brother-in-law, Joseph Hynes. Family and friends are welcome to gather on Sunday, July 31, 2016 from 4-8pm at Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home, 106 Main St, Madison. A Funeral Mass for Joan will be held on Monday, August 1, 2016 at 10:45am at St. Teresa of Avila Church, 306 Morris Avenue, Summit. Interment will follow at St. Teresa’s Cemetery, Summit. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations in memory of Joan be made to: GirlPower2Cure.org (GP2C 1881 S. 14th St. #1, Amelia Island, FL 32034), in honor of her great niece Ysabel.
