Obituary of Vincent J. Martin

Vincent ” Vinnie” Joseph Martin, 93, passed away on January 28, 2020. He was born in Newark, NJ, and lived in New Providence, NJ, for the past 36 years.
Vinnie retired from the Newark Police Department from the Detective Division and Office of the Chief of Police in 1985 after serving 32 years on the force. Upon his retirement, he worked for the private Security Departments of AT&T and Allied Signal for another 10 years.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Newark Lodge #12 and the NJ State Retired Police and Firemen’s Association.
As a World War II Veteran, he served in the United States Navy as a naval petty officer and was a member of the crew on the USS Hospital Ship Repose. During the Pacific Campaign the crew survived a typhoon off the coast of Okinawa. He received the Victory Medal, American Theater Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Medal.
Vinnie was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 711 as well as the Essex County Catholic War Veterans. He was also an active member of the Our Lady of Peace Church in New Providence and served as an usher.
Vinnie is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Jennie, and his loving daughters Debra Martin, Lisa Kenny, Patricia Martin and son-in-law, Lance Berkheimer as well as his cherished grandchildren, Meghan Hopkins (Adam), Brian Kenny (Christina) and Kate Berkheimer; and great-grandchildren Avery, Annie and Garrett.
Family and friends are welcome to gather on Sunday, February 2, 2020 from 1-5 pm at Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home, 106 Main St., Madison, NJ. A Funeral Mass for Vinnie will be celebrated on Monday, February 3, 2020, at 10:00 am at St. Vincent Martyr Church, Madison. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.
