SHE WAS BEAUTIFUL....
.... but she didn't know what that meant.
When she was a little girl
they told her she was beautiful
but it had no meaning
in her world of bicycles
and pigtails
and adventures in make-believe.
Later, she hoped she was beautiful
as boys started taking notice
of her friends
and phones rang for
Saturday night dates.
She felt beautiful on her wedding day,
hopeful with her
new life partner by her side
but, later,
when her children called
her beautiful,
she was often exhausted,
her hair messily tied back,
no make up,
wide in the waist
where it used to be narrow;
she just couldn't take it in.
Over the years, as she tried,
in fits and starts,
to look beautiful,
she found other things
to take priority,
like bills
and meals,
as she and her life partner
worked hard
to make a family,
to make ends meet,
to make children into adults,
to make a life.
Now,
she sat.
Alone.
Her children grown,
her partner flown,
and she couldn't remember
the last time
she was called beautiful.
But she was.
It was in every line on her face,
in the strength of her arthritic hands,
the ampleness that had
a million hugs imprinted
on its very skin,
and in the jiggly thighs and
thickened ankles
that had run her race for her.
She had lived her life with a loving
and generous heart,
had wrapped her arms
around so many to
to give them comfort and peace.
Her ears had
heard both terrible news
and lovely songs,
and her eyes
had brimmed with,
oh, so many tears,
they were now bright
even as they dimmed.
She had lived and she was.
And because she was,
she was made beautiful.

My dear cousin Helen Pat has gone to a better place where there is no pain or weeping. How hard it is to let you go. I pray “Mom” has hugged you close and Katie by your side. We had our wonderful Saturday and when we hugged and said goodby we didn’t know the loss to come. My friend, my confidant, the person I’ve laughed with, cried with for my lifetime from you teaching me to walk to that Saturday. Until we meet again you’ll stay in my hear. Bonnieo

George Connolly posted a condolence

Our sincere condolences to the family of Helen, a kind and friendly neighbor who we enjoyed chatting with while she was out with her pets or just while going to the mailbox. We also remember Carmen from the days when we would meet him while walking our granddaughters dog Sophie, who looked like a twin to Katie. I remember meeting Steve who was a frequent visitor, and Agnes as a former neighbor. I spoke with Helen on the phone late last year, she said she was fine and doing well. She said she had a nice young woman who was there to help her, but she really didn't need the help. She said she allowed it in order to to keep Steve happy. I believe I also exchanged emails with Theresa around the same time.
Once again, our sincere condolences to all.

We will miss Aunt Helen so much. She was a wonderful companion and friend to my Mom, her first cousin Bonnie. They were two peas in a pod these past few years but kindred spirits for many, many years before that- she gave great advice and had knowledge on so many topics. I will always smile on how much she really appreciated living in a time when Google or Alexis were available to her with all that knowledge now so accessible to all . May the family hold her in dear and cherished memories.
