We're late to add our condolences to this page but have not stopped thinking about what a loss Dr. Oliver's passing is to his family, this community and to us (selfishly). He was the primary care doc for my husband and myself for the past 25 years, we never saw the need for change. His warmth, care and willingness to spend time going over our symptoms with no clock-watching are all things we will not forget. And how can we forget his jokes - even if he repeated them at every visit. I always left his office with a big smile on my face. His care was truly the old fashioned kind, where care for the patient came above all else, where bedside manner mattered. When many of us wonder how we can make a difference or make a mark, he did both effortlessly, just being true to his profession. Our deepest condolences to his family.

I think I may have been his youngest patient in the last 15 years.
He was the only doctor I didn't dread having to see. He was a joy.
I appreciated every visit I had with him, even when he was admonishing me.
The world lost a beautiful soul. I wish his family peace and belated condolences.

My family is so sad to learn of Dr. Oliver's death. Last fall a colleague of his referred my mother to Dr. Oliver because of a complex vascular situation and because I believe this colleague knew Dr. Oliver would take care of her when so many other doctors refused. His kind, direct team approach to figuring out the best plan of care for her was amazing to be part of. So many others told us, "I can't help you", and he said, "how can I be of service". He consulted mutiple colleagues including a physician in Canada. He was truly dedicated to his profession and treated the whole person- body, mind & spirit. He shared that his wife was a social worker and taught him this approach when I complimented him. It was obvious to me he was proud of and loved his wife. I only wish we had known him longer and that I had sent the thank you letter to him that I was intending on writing. Sending thoughts of love and peace to his family as you remember him and adjust to life without his exuberant physical presence.

I only just learned of Dr. Oliver's passing. This is a tragic loss not only to his patients but for the entire community. I've been his patient for over 28 years, and he was always interested in how the family was doing or simply what was going on in your life. I tried to bring a new joke each time I visited the office, knowing full well that for sure he would have one for me.
He was a great old school doctor - very professional and sharp. If there was an issue that required a specialist, he didn't just provide you with a referral, he made the call in the exam room to a colleague.
My condolences to his family - he was a great doctor (one of the best!) and a fantastic, empathetic person. One of a kind and he will be missed.

Today I learned of Doctor Oliver's death. What a shock it was and it's hard to imagine a world without him. He was my doctor for many years and one day I was told by the office staff that my insurance wasn't accepted anymore so I told the doc and he said: "I don't care about the insurance. I want you to keep coming". That's the kind of professional he was. We talked about his kids and I asked him if his son would become a doctor and he said no, he wants to be a comedian. He said he has to do what he loves. He understood humanity and what was important in life. On a trip to Greece, I became overwhelmed with back pain so my husband called the doc, who knows what time it was, he asked where we were and said: "Go to the airport pharmacy and get acetaminophen and ibuprofen and take this combination. When you get back tell Rita to see me." Within an hour I was feeling great thanks to him. Each time I went to his office feeling crummy I'd leave laughing. What a great sense of humor he had. He was so proud of his children and loved what he did. He will be missed but never forgotten.

We are so sorry to hear of Dr. Oliver's passing. He has been our family doctor for decades! My grandmother and mother were his patients and then my husband and I became patients too. I used to hate the wait in the waiting room, but I knew it was because he didn't rush with his patients and he always had a corny joke to tell. I still can’t believe Dr Oliver is gone and I am so incredibly heartbroken. Heartbroken for the family he spoke so lovingly of (he was so proud of his kids), the friends he had, the patients whose lives he impacted, and for me and my family. He was my doctor for more than 25 years and the one to whom I sent my loved ones. He was an amazing physician and a wonderful human. Dr Oliver was always ready with a joke, a smile, a heartfelt approach to his patients’ health, and, if you were lucky, a video of him playing the saxophone on stage. Dr Oliver was a gift to the healthcare community of Morristown and I feel so incredibly blessed to have known him for so long…and I thank him for keeping his promise to me that he would be my doctor “as long as he was still vertical.”

It is Friday evening and I just now learned of Dr. Oliver's passing. There are tears running down my face as I write this.
Firstly, I extend my most heartfelt prayers and sympathy to his family and loved ones.
Dr. Oliver was my primary physician since the mid 1980's. He was the 'old fashioned' doctor who took the time, and talked not only about the physical issue at hand, but he was also concerned about many other aspects of my life. He genuinely cared and supported me. I will miss that caring so very, very much. Other doctors these days may care, but they run on a schedule that allows only for cordialities and brief discourse, not much more.
I always feared this day would come, because I knew his genuine and special way of caring for his patients will likely be impossible to find again in my lifetime.
I pray that all the good this wonderful man did in this lifetime with his caring and kindness is returned to him wherever he may be. He was truly a very special doctor and person and I will miss him terribly.

I am heartbroken to hear of Doc’s passing. He was my primary and my vascular physician for many years until I moved away; I came under his care when dealing with my first (of many) blood clots. There aren’t the right words to describe the impact his heart has had on his patients, and I’m so honored to have been one of them. Someday, at the end of my life, if I get to take that one last walk on the train cars and say goodbye to the people who impacted me and who I loved most — I know it’ll be Doc at the beverage car waiting with a corny joke, smiling with his eyes.
Here’s to you, Doc.

In each office visit and there were many over the years, he would take as much time as necessary to treat me and truly cared about my well-being. I’d laugh with him when he told a joke even if it wasn’t too funny and we’d talk about his family that he cherished so much. When I’d leave his office would leave in comfort as did so many others.

My heart breaks upon the news of Dr Oliver’s passing. As a pharma rep for 15 years who knows hundreds of doctors personally, I can truly say- he was one of a kind. I became his patient about 10 years ago (a referral from another amazing doc, Craig Bissinger, OBGYN). I told Dr B I was so happy with his recommendation, that I loved Dr Oliver equally as Dr B. Soon after becoming Dr O’s patient I got a blood clot - and was happy to learn he was a vascular specialist, too! He has fielded so many worried phone calls from me over the years. When he gave me his mobile phone number after my blood clot, I knew I was very fortunate to have such an amazing doctor - nobody does that! We bonded over both being parents to twins+. I saved up corny jokes my son told me just to share with Dr Oliver at my next appointment - occasionally teaching him one he didn’t already know, which was shocking because we all know he was full of them! He was so thorough and careful with his practice of medicine. I started bringing my father to see him and recommended many friends who also have loved him. The world has lost an amazing soul. I’m so sorry. Prayers for all of his family, friends and office staff, who are as lovely as he was. He will be missed greatly, but has left a great mark on this world. ❤️

Condolences to Dr Oliver’s family. I am so saddened by Dr Oliver’s passing. He has been our primary physician for 30 years. I am heartbroken for his family. He was one of the best. Always a silly joke before our visit. Dr Oliver will definitely be missed. May he Rest In Peace.

I have worked with Dr. Oliver since 1978. I have always found him to be a kind and caring human being. He will be greatly missed by all of the staff in the hospital and especially the vascular lab at MMC. RIP my friend

I have know Dr. Oliver since he came to MMH (now MMC) in early 1970's as a Resident. It was a joy to see him at work as a physician & caring for his patients. He had a joke or funny situation he liked to share with his patients or staff to ease their anxiety about their health or as you cared for his patients. I was lucky to have him as my PCP as I needed his expertise for my care. He was always there to provide a listening ear, lift my spirits & provide excellent care. He was a special person & will be missed by many who knew him by the many different hats he wore in his life. I am sorry for your loss of a good person & he was one of the good ones. Karen Shippey, RN.
