Obituary of Irene Hollowood Dolan
Irene Dolan died unexpectedly after a brief illness in Saint Johnsbury, Vermont at the age of 95. Irene was nearly a life-long resident of Florham Park. She graduated from Ridgedale School in 1943 and from Madison High School in 1947. At Madison High she was valedictorian of her class. During her many years in Florham Park, Irene lived on Indian Lane, Columbia Turnpike, Cathedral Avenue and James Street. In 1949 she married Bill Dolan at Saint Vincent's Church in Madison. Bill was a World War II Navy veteran from Madison who she met shortly after graduating high school.
Irene was an employee of New Jersey Bell telephone and its successor companies for many years. She started out as a telephone operator in the telephone exchange above the old Woolworth store on Main Street in Madison. Over the years she worked for the Bell successor companies in Morristown, Whippany and Murray Hill. While working and raising five children, Irene continued her education and graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. from Kean University in 1975.
Irene was an active volunteer in Florham Park and the surrounding community, serving as a Girl Scout leader, as a volunteer with the Florham Park Memorial First Aid Squad, member and past president of the Florham Park chapter of AARP and as a volunteer with JBWS of Morris County. She was also an active member of the Holy Family Church parish.
Together Irene and Bill raised five children, Larry (spouse: Margaret Healey), Lynn (spouse: Robert Nabinger), Martin, Jen (spouse: Dan Gerber) and Matthew (spouse: Jennifer). She survived by a sister, Peggy Larney and sister-in-laws Marie Dolan, Marion McLaughlin, and Beverly McLaughlin as well as brother-in-laws Terry Larney and Richard Keenan. She is also survived by grandchildren Kathy Dolan, Amara Dolan Butterfield, Renee Nabinger, Tyler Nabinger, Corey GerberDolan, Jesse GerberDolan, Josh GerberDolan, Christian Dolan and Molly Dolan as well as great-grandchildren Kiara Dolan Butterfield and Kayden Dolan Butterfield. Numerous nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews are also among the survivors.
Visitation will be at Burroughs, Kohr and Dangler Funeral Home on Main Street in Madison from 4-7pm on Friday, November 10. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Family Church in Florham Park at 11:30 on Saturday November 11. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover will follow.
