Obituary of James Robert Logan, Jr.

James R. Logan, Jr., 93, passed away on Wednesday, 09/04/2024. Born in 1931 to James Robert and Bernice Logan of Des Moines, IA, Jim lived in his Morris Plains home for 57 years.

He is survived by children Elise Petrella (Bill), Stewart Logan, James Logan, Cyndi Logan Durbin (Dave), and Maureen Logan Underwood (Jay).  He is predeceased by his wife Alba, sister Julia Logan Howe, and cherished grandchild Rob Petrella.

His story-telling and support will be remembered especially by grandchildren Steve (Joanna) and Lynn Petrella (Dan), Jonathan, Jack and Jeff Logan, and Paige and Sara Underwood.

Jim served in the Iowa Air National Guard in Maine during the Korean War, after which he returned to Iowa to complete his undergraduate and law degrees at Drake University. He subsequently served as a special agent in the Newark offices of the FBI in the 1950s and ‘60s, where he worked tirelessly on several civil rights cases. After leaving the FBI, he had a long career with Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ.  Jim also spent several years post-retirement with the USTA as an association president and tennis umpire in various tournaments including the U.S. Open in New York. An avid player himself, he continued to participate in tennis groups well into his 80s.

Visitation will take place on Tues, September 10, 2024 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Dangler Funeral Home of Morris Plains, NJ.  A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at Notre Dame of Mt. Carmel Church in Cedar Knolls, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital  (www.stjude.org).
