I have known Bob for 32 years. From 1986 to 2005, I worked with him. He was a mentor and a friend, and we remained friends after his working days until the end. I could go on and on describing his good qualities as soldier, an attorney and a man, but one quality says more about him than all the rest. Robert Renton Baldwin was honorable. He served his country and employer with honor. No one worked harder or was more reliable. He also treated his friends and family honorably. He respected others and he commanded respect through his example. He was one of the rare people that you meet in life who you would want in your foxhole when the going gets tough. He will be missed. Rest in Peace Bob.

It says in Bob's obituary that he was "an accomplished tax attorney." For those of us who worked with Bob in the field of state taxation of life insurance companies, Bob was more than "accomplished." He was The Man. He was involved in authoring countless state laws taxing life insurance companies. Bob was a mentor to many of us "younger" tax accountants and tax attorneys. Among those of us who he mentored, he was affectionately known as "The Great Baldwinian." Beyond that, he was a heck of a nice guy. I consider myself very lucky to have had the pleasure and benefit of working with a man of such professional skill and knowledge.

Bob and I met at VMI our Rat Year and had the assignment of doing grunt work for first class cadets. The first class cadets were our ‘dykes’ and they looked out for us as we were hammered in the Rat Line.
As Rats (I choose to capitalize the term) we all took an exam to see how much we learned and remembered from high school. Bob placed first or second and I picked up the other end of the list.
Bob was a very delightful friend with a good sense of humor. It was a pleasure to know him and I am saddened that he is gone.
Condolences from myself and my wife Susan.

My sympathies to the Baldwin family on the passing of Bob Baldwin. Bob and I were Brother Rats at VMI and had the dubious honor of matriculating from NJ. i am sure he passed along the stories of the warm reception we received upon our arrival at VMI in 1959 and throughout our Rat Year.
I can still remember the cab ride we took from Lexington to DC to catch the train to Newark during Christmas vacation our Rat Year.
Bob and my roommate Carl Hinkle were both math majors and I remember them working very hard on subjects I could not for a moment understand.
Bob was smart, congenial, and a fellow Jerseyite. Good bless him.
