Obituary of Col. Robert R. Baldwin
Col. Robert Renton Baldwin (Bob), a retired military officer and accomplished tax attorney, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2019 at the age of 78 surrounded by family at his home in Randolph, New Jersey.
He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, teacher, lawyer and military officer. Born December 11, 1940 in Orange, New Jersey, he was the son of Albert Fairchild Baldwin, Jr. and Carol Renton. In 1959, Bob graduated from The Pingry School located in Hillside, New Jersey (at the time). In 1963, he graduated with a B.A. in mathematics from the Virginia Military Institute (Lexington, Virginia), and completed law school in 1966 “on the other side of the hill” at Washington and Lee University.
Col. Baldwin was commissioned in 1963 as an officer in the U.S. Army. His active duty service started in 1967 with transfer to the JAG Corps after completing law school and a clerkship at the Virginia State Supreme Court. Upon completion of his active duty service in 1971, he continued to serve his country in the U.S. Army Reserve as a JAG Officer until being placed in the Retired Reserves in 1993. In 2000, he was officially retired from the military. In his private career, he was employed as a Tax Attorney by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York, New York, from 1971 until his retirement in 2005 where he rose to be a leader in his field. He was also an active board member at the Rosedale Cemetery in Montclair, New Jersey, for over 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Ann; his children, Catheryn Ann, Robert Renton Jr., and Elizabeth Marie; two grandchildren, Samantha Renton and Timothy James; and his brother Albert Fairchild Baldwin, III. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Fairchild Baldwin, Jr. and Carol Renton; and his sister Carol “Petey” Flynn.
Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00pm Friday, January 25, 2019 at the Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home in Madison, New Jersey. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 12:00pm at the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township in Chatham, New Jersey.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township in Chatham, New Jersey or to a charitable organization of your choice.
